HISTORY AND MILESTONES

A Brief History of DepEd Siargao

The Schools Division of Siargao holds a significant place in the history of education in the island, tracing its roots back 48 years. Its establishment was made possible through Republic Act No. 4696, sponsored by the late Congressman Constantino C. Navarro, Sr., which was approved on June 18, 1966. This legislative move laid the foundation for the formal education sector in Siargao, opening opportunities for quality and accessible education to the 130 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools in the island.

The agency’s mission is firmly grounded in the national educational framework, aligning its mandate with the Department of Education’s Governance of Basic Education Act of 2001, also known as Republic Act 9155. This law reinforces the responsibilities of DepEd and its divisions in delivering a holistic, inclusive, and accessible education for all.

Operating from its registered office located in Km 3, Barangay Osmeña, Dapa, Surigao del Norte, Siargao Division plays a crucial role in ensuring the proper implementation of education policies. Over the years, it has worked to strengthen schools and learning centers throughout the island, creating an environment where education can thrive amidst the challenges of the times.

For more than half a century, DepEd Siargao has been a leading institution on the island, constantly evolving to meet the needs of its learners while upholding its commitment to accessible and quality education. Under the leadership of former Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Nelia S. Lomocso, the division achieved a significant milestone on November 8, 2022, when it was conferred the Prime HRM Level II Bronze Award by the Civil Service Commission. This recognition highlights DepEd Siargao’s dedication to excellent public service, demonstrating its progress and impact in fostering educational development in the island.

The Schools Division of Siargao has a rich history of success, earning numerous achievements in various fields over the years. This progress is the result of the strong leadership of both past and present Schools Division Superintendents (SDSs), along with the dedicated efforts of their Assistant Schools Division Superintendents (ASDSs). These leaders have worked tirelessly to transform the division from its humble beginnings into the thriving institution it is today. – ERGorgonio
